Men who are diagnosed with BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) or enlarged prostate are treated and prescribed with medication as the beginning treatment. When taking medications, doctors advise all men who are diagnosed with BPH about the action of the medication and informing them about the expected side effects of each medication they are prescribed with. The purpose of this article is to compare and contrast the Hytrin and Flomax medication. Discussions will include information on the chemical composition of each medication, the generic availability of Flomax and Hytrin, the action and efficiency of both drugs and as well as the common list of the expected side effects each medication has.
The chemical composition and characteristic of each drug are different. Flomax capsule contain the active ingredient of tamsulosin hydrochloride. Flomax belongs to a group of drugs called alpha1-adrenoceptor antagonist. The generic availability of Flomax is tamsulosin. Hytrin on the other hand contain the active ingredient terazosin hydrochloride. Hytrin belongs to a class of drugs known as the alpha-1-selective adrenoceptor blocking agents, it is a quinazoline derivative. The generic availability of Hytrin is Terazosin.
Flomax medication works by increasing the maximum urinary flow rate of men with BPH. It reduces the smooth muscle tension in prostate and the urethra to relieve urinary obstruction. Because it is an alpha1-adrenoceptor antagonist it can reduce blood pressure by lowering the peripheral resistance in the body. Hytrin works by relaxing the smooth muscles around the blood vessels in the body and within the prostate and bladder thereby helping to increase the urinary flow and also relieve symptoms of urinary frequency.
When taking Flomax, it is followed by a number of possible side effects which include pain in the back, blurry vision, cough, decreased sexual abilities, diarrhea or loose frequent stool, dizziness, drowsiness, lightheadedness, runny or stuffy nose, sinusitis, insomnia-trouble sleeping and weakness. And the possible side effects when taking Hytrin are dizziness, drowsiness, lightheadedness, nasal congestion, nausea and weakness.
Taking either Flomax or Hytrin does not treat BPH; Medications just help relieve and soothe painful symptoms. When taking Hytrin, there are rapid responses observed, most often men who take this medication get dizzy because of its direct action in the blood vessels. Meanwhile, when taking Flomax, most men do not experience any rapid improvements with their urinary symptoms. The effects of Flomax do not seem to work right away. Improvements can be observed after two to four weeks after the start of Flomax intake.
